De Voest’s Last Match

The Odlum Brown Vancouver Tennis Open took place on a humid day at the Hollyburn Tennis Club with several outstanding matches in the morning and continuing throughout the day concluding on Centre court.

The Cambie Surgery Court Jennifer Brady of the United States defeated An-Sophie Mestach of Belguim 6-4,-6-4 and 3-6 in an exciting match taking three sets to decide a winner.
Court 1 Irena Pavlovic of France in another three set match defeated Veronica Cepede  of Paraguay in the women’s division along with several other matches that taking place at the same time.
The Men’s Division James Ward of Great Britain played Wayne Odenski of the  United States Timea  Babos of Hungary met Allie Will of the United States and in doubles Austin Krajicek and John-Patrick Smith of the United States.
Singles action for the men Rik De Voest of South Africa took on Thanaski Kokkinakis of Australia and this was a tough three set match as Kokkinakis came out on top by a 6-4, 4-6 and 7-6 that was a tiebreaker.
This match was special as it was De Voest last match as he is retiring from the game at the young age of 34, he will still be involved as it’s a sport he loves and wants to promote.
It was her where he met his wife five years ago and interesting to know that they have a 5 month old new baby and he will continue to work with young up and coming stars of tomorrow.
Daniel Evans of Great Britain defeated Taro Daniel of Japan 6-4 7-5 on the Cambie Surgery Court and on court 1 in women’s play Risa Ozaki of Japan took on Anna Tatishvili of the United States with Tatishvili winning in straight sets.
Other matches in the afternoon had Lesia Tsurenko of the Ukraine defeat Romina Oprandi of Switzerland 6-3 6-1 and court 1 Olga Savchuk of the Ukraine and Madison Brengle of the United States in the women’s division and in the men’s Miharu Imanishi of Japan met Jarmila Gajdosova of Australia.
The evening matches saw past champion Marcos Baghdatis took on Chase Buchanan of the United States winning his match 7-6 in a tie breaker and 6-3 to advance in a great doubles match.
Thanaski Kokkinakis and Jordan Thompson from Australia took on Alex Bogomolov of Russia and James Cerretan of the United States winning in a ties breaker 10-8, 6-2 and 4-6.
The final match of the night was a doubles match between Asia Muhammad and Maria Sanchez of the United States taking on Eri  Hozumi and  Irena Pavlovic of France.
This match went to a tie breaker with Sanchez and Muhammad winning 10-6 on the tie breaker and 6-4, 3-6.
The day concluded at the Hollyburn Country Club as it continues over the weekend as the match ups for the finals will be decided for Sunday in the beautiful facilities with a great shot of Vancouver in the back drop that is visible.hollyburn club
